I don’t know about the US but in Canada, security can’t even actually physically stop you in any way so no need to run!
They get away with it sometimes here, but they usually cannot touch thieves. Every security guard I’ve ever talked to told me the same thing “they don’t pay me enough to run after anyone!”
I don’t know the rules, but there’s no shortage of YT videos of Walmart security grabbing people.
