  • The biggest issue with accepting free housing and other perks is the unspoken cost. What are the expectations in return?

I’ve spent time in taiwan and mainland china, as well as many other asian countries, china has its citizenry riled up in rampant nationalism thanks to the isolation of the people and propaganda. The propaganda of taiwan (and hong kong) being part of china is deeply rooted in the state sponsored group-think and is not going away any time soon. I will say the people I met, while angry when speaking about taiwan, did not seem to wish the people there any ill will, rather they seemed upset about the very idea of taiwan being separate.

That’s all to say, the political situation is complex. However the real question here is multifold. 1) is it against your chosen moral framework to capitulate and live in china and 2) if it is, what are your morals worth to you, what specific monetary amount would get you to renounce your views.

Parts of china are beautiful, the culture is lovely especially in rural areas, and living there could genuinely be nice. However your country is currently presenting the world’s largest bullseye and while your presence won’t swing the final result, if you feel you have a moral responsibility to stay and speak up, then do so!

  • This is a shitpost, but your response is clearly taking it seriously, so I’m responding in kind. Your response is an appeal to tradition, a logical fallacy and not a valid defense of anyone’s behavior.

The dnc has made many mistakes, any single good decision they’ve made isn’t an honest defense of current poor actions.

They should not have railroaded bernie, they failed to present a valid narrative and lost to djt twice? Wtf

  • llama is good and I’m looking forward to trying deepseek 3, but the big issue is that those are the frontier open source models while 4o is no longer openai’s best performing model, they just dropped o3 (god they are literally as bad as microsoft at naming) which shows in benchmarks tremendous progress in reasoning

When running llama locally I appreciate the matched capabilities like structured output, but it is objectively significantly worse than openai’s models. I would like to support open source models and use them exclusively but dang it’s hard to give up the results

I suppose one way to start for me would be dropping cursor and copilot in favor of their open source equivalents, but switching my business to use llama is a hard pill to swallow

  • Your worth as a person isn’t measured by your ability to find a romantic companion

You are simply a person, people of the alternate gender are simply people. There is no magic transition that happens when you find a relationship, people are depressed in and out of love.

My recommendation is to find community, leave the house, look for public events, join board game nights, pick up a hobby like pottery or biking or a specific video game, get really into something and enjoy your platonic time with people who also enjoy that thing.

Platonic relationships have just as much value as romantic relationships.

  • idk he certainly did some decent stuff, and tried to do even more while being blocked by the other branches, but he broke his word several times.

I’ll miss the boring politics as we faceplant back into potus orange haired toadus

It’s been fine waking up every day simply concerned about the economy and people experiencing terrible things from afar, soon my morning concerns will include our local immigrants, a christofacist state, political retribution against some of the few politicians with some integrity, a further broken judicial system, broken education, banned abortions, broken social security, further broken health insurance. Ugh

  • I’m a software person, llm tools for programming have been frankly remarkable. In my cleanest codebases copilot (using gpt4) autocompletes my intention correctly about 70% of the time today, reducing the amount of code I physically type by a huge margin. The accuracy shifts over time and it’s dramatically less helpful for repositories that aren’t pristine and full of well named functions and variables

Beyond that chatgpt has been a godsend sifting through the internet for the information I need, the new web feature is just outstanding since it actually gives sources

Chatgpt has also helped with writers block a ton, getting beyond plot points in my novel I was having a hard time with

It’s been great with recipes, no more wading through fake life stories and ads

It’s been helpful for complex questions about new topics I’m an amateur on, I’ve learned so much about neurology and the process of how neurons interact almost exclusively through the platform, fact checking takes a little time but so far it’s been almost perfectly accurate on higher level objective questions

It’s been helpful as a starting place for legal questions, the law is complex and having a starting place before consulting the lawyers has been really nice so I know what to ask

    I could go on
