  • The fundamental problem with using torrents to share small files (which old ROMs are), is that content is only shared while seeding or leeching. A torrents health works best, when people are actively leeching. You’re not going to get that for 1 MB files.

Given these are small files, I don’t get why you wouldn’t simply jam 1000 or whatever games into a torrent. I dunno, make a torrent for each year or even per console. Update the torrents with new files every month.

Maybe pop in the full emulator software in the torrent so it’s ready to go. Sure, plenty of redundancy, extra bandwidth, yadayada but given the files are so small…

Also, if these are abandoned or public domain games, you can easily publish them on the internet archive.

  • If it becomes impossible to make a living as an artist, the only people becoming creatives will be the kids of rich people. Mummy and daddy can pay for them to spend 10 years flouncing around Hollywood, making loss making tv shows, or whatever before they stand a chance of being paid enough. Already a huge problem.

If only rich people are making art, it’s inevitable that mass culture will be dominated by the ideology and beliefs of out of touch rich people. If you want culture that criticizes the status quo, you need more poor or working class kids in the creative sector.

This being said, my pension plan is a rope, so I’m quite happy pirating rather than paying for luxuries. Especially if I’m stealing from a company that engages in wage theft, avoids paying tax, etc. If anything it then becomes perfectly moral.

But if you have some spare money, go support artists and creatives who deserve it.

    Not that I’m judging anyone.

  • What’s the performance hit for sandboxie?

I know it’s not ideal, but I mainly use an old airgapped/no internet pc to running older/less demanding games. Obviously there’s a risk that the system becomes corrupted and infects the usb stick I use for file transfer, but that’s the gamble I’m taking right now.

If anyone reading this thinks it’s super risky, don’t hesitate to let me know. I’m kinda assuming that most malware/harvesters/miners/viruses will want to connect to the internet, and not go the usb route. Seems like it’d be too much of a hassle, unless you want to take down a nuclear program.

I used to use steam for some stuff, but everything’s so expensive and I’m tired of all the forced updates and always on requirements, so I honestly can’t be bothered and torrent as much as possible. Only buying from GOG now, so I can at least share games with the household. Fuck 1 person licenses.
