To play devil’s advocate, an issue arises when there AREN’T more verifiable sources. If someone makes an outlandish claim like “Billy Joel used to wash his ass with crisco” and cites a dubious interview, it’s hard to find a source that definitively states Billy Joel DIDN’T wash his ass with crisco. Even worse, is if there was an actual, verified instance of one time where Billy Joel washed his ass with crisco. That may have been the only time he ever did it, and it may have been done as a joke or something like that, but now we have an interview saying he did it regularly, and an example of when he did. Now it’s a lot harder to disprove.

We’re made to believe that a mandatory 30 minute, unpaid, lunch is somehow a victory for workers rights. Tell me, do you really feel like you’re taking a break from work in those 30 minutes? Or are you still thinking about work? Are you still in “work mode”? Well guess what, that’s 30 minutes of you thinking about work and not relaxing that they are stealing from you. Your workday isn’t 8 hours, it’s 8 and a half hours. That 30 minutes isn’t really yours, it’s not enough time to get anything done. You don’t agree? Go get drunk during your lunch break. Oh what’s that? You can’t because you’ll face consequences at work? Well gee, sounds like that time doesn’t actually belong to you then if you’re not free to do whatever you want.
It used to be a job was 9-5. That’s 8 hours. Total. You either had a paid lunch, or you ate on the job. But it was PART of those 8 hours. I don’t know about you, but if I’m not getting paid for it, I don’t want to be at work a second longer than I have to. I’ve had a few jobs that let me work through lunch and it was great, I could keep working and eat at my desk and I was out of the door 30 minutes before the rest of my co-workers. Jobs that force me to take a lunch are BS. I don’t need 30 minutes to eat a sandwich, and the remaining time is NOT relaxing. I don’t get to unwind from work. I am instead filled with rage that I’m just wasting time, not getting paid, in order to uphold the illusion that the company “values our time”, when really they’re just holding us hostage.

You’re saying this from the luxury of a stable country. If the same thing were tried where you live, it would be horrific and wrong, because those actions aren’t warranted in a stable country. They only become acceptable when crime and violence have become so deeply rooted that it’s impossible to tackle them with normal means.
Imagine late stage cancer. It’s beyond the ability to get out with surgery. Instead, more drastic measures are required such as chemo or radiation therapy. This kills the cancer, but also kills some surrounding cells. It’s necessarily destructive because the cancer has spread too far to fix with less invasive measures. Imagine someone dismissing those treatments as barbaric because “even a single non-cancerous cell dying is unacceptable”. Meanwhile the person dying from cancer doesn’t really give a shit, they just want to be free from cancer.
You don’t have a single clue how bad things were in those countries before. You didn’t go outside, even in the daytime. Nearly every business was held hostage by gangs. Seeing dead bodies was a common occurrence. If you got robbed, or raped, or killed, too bad; there was essentially zero justice to be found or had. For those living under those conditions for years, the price for safety is well worth it.
You’re opposed because of the innocents who might be in jail? Where is your concern for the innocents just outright murdered due to unchecked crime?
While there are no doubt some innocents who got caught up; it has been shown time and again that the fastest and most efficient way to deal with wide spread gangs that have essentially taken over a country is massive arrests of anyone even remotely related to them.
It can turn violence filled hell-holes into safe communities within months, and the people know it. There’s a reason Argentinians and El Salvadorians have massive approval for their government right now; because it worked. People are free to walk on the street without fear of getting shot. For those who lived in fear for so long, a few false positives is a small price to pay for locking up practically every criminal overnight.

The CEO of my company decided to send a holiday E-Card to everyone right before Christmas. I reported it as a phishing attempt and IT just laughed and said it was fine. Apparently I’m the only one that reported it and just… What? An email from outside our organization that claims to be from the CEO and contains a non-descript link to an unknown website? And I’m the only one that saw red flags from that?!
