News@lemmy.world•After cost-cutting blitz, Trump administration rehires hundreds of laid-off employeesEnglish
52·1 month agoWhat a shit article. The courts ruled that the hundreds of employees that were placed on admin leave pending termination for working there less than a year were fired illegally. They cannot fire them. Since they are still on admin leave they have to come back.
What they failed to mention is that all of the employees who were put on admin leave pending termination, who then took the “fork” offer do not get to come back because they “quit.”
The GSA was and is DOGE central and is completely broken right now.

Technology@lemmy.world•The right to anonymity is powerful, and America is destroying itEnglish
45·1 month agoAge verification is ID verification. By requiring ID site owners effectively have a monopoly on the bot armies infesting reddit, YouTube, Facebook, etc. These armies aren’t going away. They are just getting smarter and more influential with AI.
Everyone is focusing on the privacy aspect and glossing over the fact that these laws give Silicon Valley complete control over online discourse. They’ll know who exactly who you are and how best to manipulate you with their bots.

1·2 months agoTrump may throw a shit fit because some stole his power by firing her. He’s a petty petty man and may just keep her because of that.

91·1 year agoYeah, there’s a big difference in protecting Obama or Bill Clinton who are retired statesman living peaceful lives and Trump who has been rallying for the last decade. How much protection is he really entitled to? Especially considering his rhetoric is motivating his would be assassins.

16·1 year agoSo, I have significant hearing loss. Phone calls remove most of the lower sound frequencies that I’m able to hear well. Trying to talk to an Indian woman speaking quickly on the phone is nearly impossible. I am so happy for this change. Requiring phone calls for service is an accessibility issue.

politics @lemmy.world•Undecided voters give Harris a look — but not a commitment — after the debateEnglish
1·1 year agoLiterally every election is decided by the “undecided”. Democrats vote democrat and republicans vote republican. It rare that anyone changes party. What determines elections is if democrats can get people who wouldn’t otherwise vote to vote. Every time people turn out, democrats win. When people are uninterested they lose. Those ~50k people in suburbs of swing states are not unimportant, they are the only thing that matters.

265·1 year agoNot to disagree with anything you’re saying, but I hate the phrase “borderline pedophillia.” Either they’re sexualizing children or not. It’s like saying “non-consensual sex.” There’s no such thing. It’s rape or consensual sex.

Technology@lemmy.world•Why is Facebook filled with so much random junk now?English
25·1 year agoAs much as everyone loves to shit on Facebook, it was an incredible service. When I was in the military I was able to keep up with my old friends and their lives. When I got out I was able to simply keep in touch with my old military buddies. Now it’s just dead. I’m genuinely sad that this has happened :(

1·1 year agoWhenever I hear about a shitty judge, DA, or cop that’s where my mind jumps immediately. Once one of these people have their judgment or integrity called into question, every case they had any involvement in should also be questioned.

Technology@lemmy.world•Small modular nuclear reactors get a reality check in new reportEnglish
57·1 year agoI was a nuclear operator in the Navy. Here are the actual reasons:
- The designs are classified US military assets
- They are not refuleable
- They only come in 2 “sizes”: aircraft carrier and submarine
- They are not scaleable. You can just make a reactor 2x as big
- They require as much down time as up time
- They are outdated
- The military won’t let you interrupt their supply chain to make civilian reactors
- New designs over promise and underdeliver
- They are optimized for erratic operations (combat) not steady state (normal power loads)
- They are engineered assuming they have infinite sea water available for everything
There’s more but that’s just off the top of my head

912·2 years agoIf you figure each engineer costs apple $250,000 a year, that’s the equivalent of 250 engineers. Could you imagine what apple could accomplish with 5 extra engineering departments? In what world is this one guy worth that much?
It’s hilarious too that they probably spent millions on him and 9/10 Americans couldn’t tell you who he is
