@[email protected] @[email protected] a good topic to developp :)

We can create one :)

I don’t care about “changing habits”. I just don’t want people that I care about being exploited and manipulated like that
If ya want people to stop using big tech, you have to change their habits. You can’t change it, they have built their network, found old friends…maybe one day but most of them aren’t attracted by the fediverse.
I want to have the equivalent of LinkedIn lunatics, and personal coaches and all that crap that one can find on Instagram/TikTok/Facebook.
How do you handle this part with the above one (exploited, manipulated) ? I don’t want them. I will leave or ask for defederation.
I enjoy this place as it is. It doesn’t need to be bigger. Once you remove it, i think plenty people will leave and create their own forum elsewhere as we did for Reddit.

You may not like how I expressed my opinion, but that doesn’t mean that I need to agree or comply.
Well that’s part of the problem and i’m just doing my job. I don’t expect you to change that quickly. It’s not my thought alone
When I talk about the shortcomings of the Fediverse and the lack of ambition of the developers, it’s because I’ve already got lots of people in here, but the overwhelming majority of them ended up going back to the proprietary platforms because there simply isn’t enough interests/interesting people. It tries so hard to reject mainstream and “normies” that it ends up feeling hostile to them. The majority of people are not interested in being lectured 24/7 by patronizing tweenies.
Well i had the same experience and i’m older than twenty year old. :)
My role isn’t to force them using free software or being part of the fediverse movement. I present software, show them how it works. I contact association, governement…explain them the problem, show newpapers, present solutions and it’s up to them to change their habits. We can’t change people habits except if governement decide to takes actions to protect our freedom and rights.
You don’t have to take it personally. They prefer big tech, so let them use big tech.

My goal is not to convince Rimu or any of the people working on PieFed to change their minds. I know they won’t. I’m not trying to win any argument here. I’m talking in a public forum, giving my opinion, so that others can have a contrasting point of view
My goal as a moderator/piefed staff is to make you understand that the way you shared your arguments/opinion is not okay. It’s not about telling the truth, the truth doesn’t have to be harsh, blunt…that’s a false belief. You can be nice and share your knownledge/opinion. And i gave you several options.
I want to make this place as useful and universal as the centralized platforms. But I find this line of reasoning quite strange, to be frank. Do you think that people should only be here if they are willing to conform to a certain set of values?
Well i’m part of the Kittens : https://chatons.org/ I meet people IRL and tell them about the fediverse, and show them how they work, i did 2 conferences on Piefed to newcomers last summer. I also did the wiki of Piefed.
I’m not only acting in the fediverse and the web but i’m also there IRL, where most of people use big tech. If you want to make this place useful and universal as centralized platforms, i think the best way to change people is telling them about the fediverse IRL, not here beside technical stuff or ui.

I had more people being brutally honestly and calling me out, to bring me back to reality. The worst thing is to when people say they want “feedback”, but are only willing to listen to those who validate or fake-support them.
That’s nit my point. If anyone were brutally honnest the world wouldn’t be better because you do hurt people. They will stop being in contact with you.
So what’s the point telling them all this ? You argument fell into a pit. S i gave you some tips to keep interaction with people and sharing your opinion and your technical knowledge without being harsh.
You don’t have to be harsh to tell the truth.
All of the “features” you are giving as “superior” are meaningless, if the Fediverse is only interesting/useful for 0.1% of the overall population. I don’t care about moral superiority. I will not consider the Fediverse “beyond” anything on any front until TikTok, Reddit, Instagram, Bluesky, et al are irrelevant as tools for mass communication.
So why are you here ? What’s the piint of being here if they are “superior”. I’m sorry, i disagree with you, it answered the need of bilkions people and i’m convaincing people IRL to migrate on these platform. They are happy to know that there is alternative to gafam.
And lastly, being able to see video from another service wasn’t possibke before. It’s the first time i see something like this thank to activitypub protocole. It’s amazing. So please stop.

Social media “platforms” are bad by its very nature and chasing this idea that we can “fix” them by making open source versions of them is a fool’s errand.
Well, the fediverse is already beyond proprietary platform :
The threadiverse is already beyond proprietary software thank to those many people building the fediverse.
why can’t we duplicate well loved proprietary platform ? We are following people needs and also slowly try to create something different by listening to people feedback. For example : we can watch peertube video. Later we will be able to use mobilizon, funkwhale…
Lastly, please, i understand that you are passionate about it but i don’t want to see this kind of critizism for any software, whatever they are :
PieFed as just a pile of hacks with no serious consideration for the Fediverse
It’s rude toward peopke who invested so much effort and gave their time to build it. It is inconsiderate. You can write a critize but without insulting people and convey your thoughts.
For example :
I disagree with piefed devlopment because their will be problem with activityPub interporability. My concern is…
(Sorry, i’m bad at understand technical detail, i can discuss over these matter)
And why i insist telling you that ?
That’s the key are in argument, discussion : people will listen to your point.
Lastly, the hardest part is also to listen what the other side say about this. It’s very difficult to listen even for myself as part of piefed’s staff. It’s not black and white, there is lot shade of colors :)

It’s this kind of thinig that makes me think of PieFed as just a pile of hacks with no serious consideration for the Fediverse
Was it necessary ? I invite you to rewritte.

Hi, i really, really invite you to use piefed git in Codeberg and open an issue here.
Why ? Because it will be easier for piefed dev to track your feedback and organize it for the next update.
As for the emoji functionality, iceshrimp/mastoon already use them. I’m not well versed on the technical side.
Yes but that gave mea new emoji, quite fun :)
I see this one : (\_\)
I’m checking on jlai.lu
I’m trying to understand that smiley ^^

FDroid is an alternative app store where its main focus is Free (libre) software. Free in the sense of freedom. They have also strong focus on tracking. Under app, you have “anti-feature” that tell you that part of its code is not opensource or that there is sensible data. :)
You should visit their website. ;)
Here is some info from their website :)
F-Droid is an installable catalogue of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications for the Android platform. The client makes it easy to browse, install, and keep track of updates on your device.
FDroid respects your privacy. We don’t track you, or your device. We don’t track what you install. You don’t need an account to use the client, and it sends no additional identifying data when communicating with our web servers, other than its version number.
We don’t even allow you to install other applications from the repository that track you, unless you first enable ‘Tracking’ in the AntiFeatures section of preferences.
Any personal data you decide to give us (e.g. your email address when registering for an account to post on the forum) goes no further than us, and will not be used for anything other than allowing you to maintain your account.

Mmm not sure how it will be managed. It depends whom you trust.
On our jlai.lu chat (https://jlailu.zulipchat.com/) we have a section that has a list of keyword to remove all post related to MAGA and far right. It gives us a peace of mind and we can purpose our keywords.
Imho, you may suggest a git, put your blocklist and invit some people to edit it. Honnestly, i think it is safer to handle personnaly because you know what’s inside. But i may be wrong
How long have you had it?
1 year
Is it worth all the hassle and expenses?
Yes. It made communication easier.
However, i live in france where all those expense are covered by our “social security”. I wish USA stop thinking about cost/debt and try our medical system. It will be better for everyone.
I can listen to podcast without transcript and hear without reading lips for the first time in my life. It is still difficult but i’m improving steadily. :)
Does the garbling sounds ever disappear?
Dunno. I read that cochlear implant can reduce Tinnitus.
How comfortable are they?
Very comfortable. Clean up is easy, i wear them every day. The very first time, i couldn’t bear high pitched sound because i never heard them. My hearing world was limited to hearing aids capability and hearing aids don’t support high pitched sound. Slowly, as i grow accoustumed to the news sounds, they increased cochlear implant ability.
when the cochlear implant is activated, it will start at the lowest power. And every month they will increase until you reach 30db. It is a gradual process.
How differently do people look at you for wearing it?
I’m different. Deaf community reject people wearing cochlear implant. Often my deafness is invisible and i had to explain that i’m deaf.
So i decided to wear a beautiful white cochlear implant to show them that i’m deaf and i love hearing aid, cochlear implant and i don’t care about their opinion. 😁
Depending on our hearing background, our hearing experience will be different. You will find more accurate answer from people who share a similar profil to you.
As for myself. I’m profoundly deaf since my birth. I weared hearing aid since my 3 years old and decided to get an cochlear implant in my thirty years old.
I prefer starting by debunking misconception about the cochlear implant. :)
how the operation will go ?
It will be quick, the operation last 2h. You will fell nothing when you wake up. Over hours your ear will hurt lightly, it will last 1-2 weeks. You will have some vertigo for 1-2 weeks too.
And one month later, they will activate the cochlear implant at its lowest power. They will increase ets power gradually.
Don’t play with rugby and Electromagnetism
The cochlear implant doesn’t like shocks : boxe, rugby…and anything that can interact with its magnet under your head’s skin : airport scanner, irm scanner…
You will stay deaf
Yes, you will hear better and it is better than hearing aids. You will hear more details. Hearing aids cannot produce high-pitched sound, only cochlear implant can achieve that.
It will improve your communication. But lot hearing people do the mistake thinking you can hear as everyone do. No, you are deaf. And wearing the cochlear implant will exhaust you, you won’t notice it.
So, use every possible meant of communication that can help you daily. It will lower your fatigue :
The cochlear implant doesn’t work immediately, there is 1-2 year of auditory rehabilitation
You won’t be able to hear sound speech the first time your cochlear implant is activated. There is 1 to 2 years of auditory rehabilitation.
It depends of people but usually, the first time, people will hear nothing or some cryptic sound. Let’s imagine you don’t know chinese. If you go in China, the first time their chinese will be mixed, you can’t distinguish a word. And over time, you will be able to notice the same word “niiao”, then later you will see the word “Nihao”.
There is 1 to 2 years of auditory rehabilitation. You will have to wait 1 month to distinguish the speaking sound. And around the 3-6 months you will start hearing words, or sentence. It depends of people. Maybe it will be faster, slower…your brain will do everything, its amazing.
You will never hear as hearing people do, tfe sound is different
The sound will be different, it sounds metalic. However, you can hear birds, small noises, high pitched sound. Your communication will be easier. Maybe the picture won’t have the accurate color, the same blue than most people, but no pixels will be missing and the color will be still blue.
In loud environnement, it will be hard to discuss with people. The cochlear implant can’t filter sound as an ear does but there are option to reduce ambient noise and improve communication in loud environnement.
Hearing with a cochlear implant or hearing aid will exhaust you. Not a lot but when you will remove it, you may enjoy those silent moments. You will be not aware of your fatigue.
Oh thank you @[email protected] :3

I think the name is a nice change from most english title. It promotes cultural diversity :)

Hello and welcome :)
Most french are on jlai.lu and on lemmy.ca. You may want to crosspost it on [email protected] to reach them. :)
We have 3 countries on jlai.lu : [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] and [email protected]. There is also sh.itjust.works a bilingual instance.
As for myself i decline, i manage too many communities and 2 french piefed instances (tarte and feddit.fr) :)
I would recommand at least two accounts per fediverse type (type = microblog, threadiverse…)
So you can have a backup account in case your instance is down. Because currently there is no sync of our subcriptions, follows.
I hope we will have a kind of nomadic identity
to solve this.
Here is the idea for a sync app
