Yes! We taught my nephews there are grown-up words, grown-up drinks and grown-up movies.

Vacationlandgirl@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Owning a home has rarely been this much more expensive than renting3·10 months agoReplace central air: $8k Deadwood 40+ year old trees: $6k Remove & replace concrete driveway without killing the 80 year old pine who’s roots are buckling it: $8k Remove particle board siding and replace with vinyl: $12k New water heater (+ new requirements for not having a pressure bomb in the house): $3k
Owning a home for three years has been more expensive than renting for a couple decades. Sure the mortgage is $500 a month less then rent, but the loans/credit card + interest for all the above is killing us.
Seriously considering one of the brand new apartments in the up and coming district for only $2k a month if we can sell the money pit with outdated everything!!

Vacationlandgirl@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•To the girls here: what action or social behaviour/etiquette you think you can get away doing/not doing that you couldn't if you were a man?183·1 year agoPutting on makeup in public; specifically thought of refreshing lipstick at the table in a restaurant while waiting for the check.
Vacationlandgirl@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What did you have to learn the hard way?10·1 year agoYou have to roll forward and reconcile the fixed assets every month or you will spend days catching up at year end, invariably finding a prior period issue that has to be corrected in the current period.
I was warned, but trusted the system too much - it can’t regulate human error, no matter how many controls are in place!
And then leave it in the front of the parking spot, where you can’t see it until you’ve committed to pulling in. Forcing you to back out, gesturing towards the windshield to communicate to the guy that was waiting for you to pull all the way in (who now has to stop to let you out and know you’ll beat him to another spot since you’re in front) that some jackass left a cart in the spot and it’s not your fault!!
If there are three legs, and one is a different height, the table won’t wobble but the top will be slanted. Probably still not ideal at a coffee shop, but at least it won’t move!

Vacationlandgirl@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Car dealers say they can’t sell EVs, tell Biden to slow their rolloutEnglish72·2 years agoPHEV is the answer! Give us options, doesn’t have to be one of the other; Chevy Volt had it for a bit, but it must not have been profitable because now I can’t find a PHEV that gets more than 30 miles on a full charge!
Vacationlandgirl@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Car dealers say they can’t sell EVs, tell Biden to slow their rolloutEnglish472·2 years agoI loved my Volt… Charged overnight in a normal 110 outlet got me the 43 miles to work and back (after about year 5, not quite the whole way) but I could still decide to go on a 600 mile road trip spur of the moment. Had to give up the 2014 in 2023 when a full charge wouldn’t go 20 miles. ☹️
There is no PHEV comparable now, though! Made the switch back to full ICE and I hate it.
Vacationlandgirl@lemmy.worldto Memes@lemmy.ml•Since we're railing on corporate America...1·2 years agoI’m not good at hobbies, I think I’m so brainwashed that work has become my hobby. Except the work I do as a “hobby” is my previous job (in a different department at the same company) that I haven’t officially done for 3.5 years, they’ve hired 3 consecutive replacements for me, weird that they keep quitting cuz there is too much pressure to get 65+ hours worth of work done a week. I guess they must have real hobbies, family, friends… It’s been suggested, after the exit interviews, that I might be the problem and created unrealistic expectations for the role.
I need a real hobby, but I haven’t been able to find anything as fulfilling as turning on the work computer after hours and getting shit done when there is nobody about to interrupt, there are no actual expectations or requirements and then I’m actually told I’m appreciated! Hobbies take so much effort.
This reminded me… My 13 year old stepson came over on the day he learned about the Holocaust in school (Alabama) and was delighted to tell us that as a pale, blonde and blue-eyed boy he would have been considered perfect by Nazi standards. Then proceeded to complain that it wasn’t fair that he got detention for telling other kids in his class that history proved he was better than them because he would have had a great life when they went to concentration camps. 😢
