One note about the complaints and drama in response to your suggestions though: I see your instance is lemmy.ml and that fact alone will make a lot of people respond to you with hostility, regardless of what your personal political beliefs actually are.

And I don’t know the latest of who is defederated with who, but you may also not even see some of the more decent communities.

Resisting the standard smartphone addiction just makes the addiction of some others so much more apparent. My own wife is still pretty badly shackled to hers.

I love hearing the individual specifics. All the variety and niches that make life interesting.

It’s funny you mention getting back into Japanese, because my big focus this year has been rebuilding and upgrading my koi pond. It would be neat to learn the language, but knowing how I function I don’t think it’s in the cards for me.

Then for my more physical activities, that was carpentry and construction driven by the damn pond. :D

It’s perfect for me though. I am a builder and creator to my core, and my career is in software and electronics, so outdoor wood working perfectly offsets that.

Oh same here! My reduced phone usage has been part of a much larger overall improvement in my well being and being able to live in the moment and be content.

I recently saw a video from a harvard dude talking about how we NEED to be bored. It’s when we fall into our baseline mental state and start thinking through shit and figuring life out. And not doing that can lead to anxiety and depression and other bad shit. Given my experiences, I certainly cannot disagree.

Smart phones are simultaneously such a wonder of human engineering and have become such a disappointment of human greed.

This whole situation has made me just care less about my phone, and use it less in my life while I use Linux PCs much more.

I don’t see my phone as a “computer” at this point, really. It’s more of a communication appliance. If I’m launching an app that’s not texting, calling, GPS, or music, it’s probably a replacement for a website I’d normally use on a PC.

Linux phones could change this though. The idea of your PC being your docked phone would work great for most use cases. Unfortunately though, even though I would love it I don’t really see the general public jumping at the chance to get back to the desktop experience. I could maybe see a little traction in the business world.

I think it’s more that I’m a person trying to give an honest recommendation to help a fellow human being, and it is the ADS that try to be like ME! :D

But you’re right. My strategic placement of exclamation points make it read like an infomercial script. Remember the meme about using occasional exclamation point in work emails to seem not insane!

The PC is in another room but the desk for it isn’t in place yet. And he knows it exists. He’s just in third grade and is not quite an Operating System Snob just yet.

Linux Mint Cinnamon is awesome. I’m a developer for embedded linux systems and I run the current version of Mint on all my machines, even at work. Having a user friendly experience out of the box doesn’t make it not Linux/FOSS.

And if the ease of installation surprised you, just wait until you see what system updates are like compared with windows!

I updated two of my systems to Linux Mint 22.2 yesterday and the entire install process runs in the background in about 90 seconds without disrupting what you’re doing (I was in a meeting while I let it install). Then you reboot whenever convenient and that’s less than another minute.

Mint is based on ubuntu so that makes sense to me!

Windows 2000 having a larger market share than 8: you also love to see it, lol. I had some fun years where I was mostly using UNIX for school stuff and Win2k for games.

It does, in my experience. At least in Linux Mint.

At home, my old Brother laser is tucked off in a far corner of the house connected to wifi, and my wired home PC as well as my wifi work laptop both see it and can print to it just fine.

At work even those big printers show up and function.

There’s some good potential here for sure. I use a project called Sober to run Roblox on my Linux PC, which runs the Android version. It works incredibly well.

I don’t know which all aircraft were involved at different points, but there was absolutely a shoot-down by an F-22.

I don’t know anything about this website but it was one of Wikipedia’s sources. I remember seeing the pictures/videos with the F-22 clearly visible, plus the noteworthy stats like being the first f-22 kill, being the first engagement over US territory since WW2, and that it was probably the highest air to air kill.

Yeah you are absolutely right. I do just check it on my phone or PC now.

But having it constantly visible for the months or years I had it on my watch face etched the habit into my ADHD brain. It also gave me a feel for how weather and time of day affect it. But not in a way where I try to vibe measure the UV index. It reminds me to check the weather data. :)

It also plays into the conservative point of view that everybody who gives a shit about the biosphere is just as ignorant as they are, and that the reasons for taking away their plastic straws and grocery bags have to do with evil communist america-destruction rather than preventing things like micro plastics in the organs of developing fetuses and global climate change.

Ignorance and pretending a problem doesn’t exist is like step 0 of most conservative policies.

In all fairness to smart watches, mine is what turned me on to regularly checking the UV index. That’s an important thing for all people, but especially me because I have an increased skin cancer risk due to unrelated medical stuff. And it was extra-extra important this year because I have done a ton of good work outside this summer.

And to be more specific about my watch situation, there’s more going on than just avoiding notifications. I have been minimizing the amount of stuff I keep on my person in general, right down to finally getting my wedding ring tattooed on this year. There are various reasons ranging from abstract introspective life improvement stuff to the practical where that outside work I mentioned was constant and pretty rough on anything on my hands/arms.

So even if I wore a nice mechanical watch, I’d probably still be going with the double bare wrists right now.

I think I am just done with the whole concept of the convenient prepackaged tech product, and especially staying “connected” with them.

For example, I stopped wearing a smart watch this summer and it’s been a positive. I was the type to wear it 23 hours a day and track my sleep with it and everything. It turns out that not instantly seeing every notification or knowing the exact minute of the day are not a big deal, sans are even good for me.

Part of what I’ve also done is use my phone a lot less and my linux desktop a lot more. I use it as a mobile communication device and not my computer for everything. I guess the next time I need to replace it I’ll either get an iphone since everybody in my family has one, or I’ll see where these wonderful Linux phone projects end up.
