I went ahead and forked out my savings to buy a Fairphone with /e/os preinstalled just because of this. My big fear though is that some of my favorite FOSS apps will disappear because the developers abandon the platform. I hope that will not be the case.

On top of this is the fact that google is locking down the ability to install apps outside of the play store on standard ROMs.

Will it have live preview like Typora or MarkText?

The problem is that everyone is expecting a pain free transition where it’s functionally 1:1. It will never be that way. Mastodon is a decent experience which had improved quite a lot (ive been using it since 2018). There’s also Bluesky if people insist on having the polished corporate experience (ie. Gamification algorithms) which will inevitably be overcome by enshitification like all other corporate services.

Something has to be done though. Switch to a custom ROM on android. Ditch apple or simply don’t upgrade - repair the device… If you must use AI use Mistral or something not owned by American tech oligarchs. Get off the google apps, use Linux… There are so many ways to do something. Just do what you can feaaibly do and try to get your friends and family on board as well.

Yeah, on the networked virtual machine you will be playing it on because no one can afford the hardware to run games anymore.

Put on your critical thinking caps people. Every major technology company in the US is supporting the rise of fascism. All of them. Apple even provided a gold bar to Trump to show just how aligned they are. Boycott them all. The tech oligarchs are out of control.

To make it even worse, a lot (all?) Of that wealth is not even real. So they’re hoarding imaginary wealth which they use to keep everyone else from having real material security. The whole system is screwed and we just let it happen. Its quite depressing.

Not a big deal for me as I customize every phone that I own anyway, so for me I’m just using Lawnchair and that works perfectly for me even on this phone so I don’t see an issue with it.

My bank app worked. I was very happy about it. My metro pass app also installed without issue and transferred my pass. Even government apps worked. Microg is useful for sure.

I keep hitting the volume key with my thumb and somehow getting the sound on mute. But its about learning new muscle control :) It would be cool if their were a software update where it would require a double click to activate the sound.

Yeah, same here. If I had to highlight a negative, its the poor placement of the volume keys, esp, because I’m left handed… But the positives far outweigh the one annoyance. I love this thing. I fwwl like it’s actually mine, and not just locked down.

Its a major opportunity for the FOSS community. We need to step up.

Proprietary tech does completely suck though. Its all driven by capital.

I will admit that I am very cynical right now when it comes to multibillion dollar companies. I can also see it as being possible that he (the CEO) does not want his technology to be used for mass surveillance or Autonomous drone swarms. But seeing what we know, how corporations are acting and how they are protecting their own financial interest, this is, after all, capitalism, it would not surprise me if this is just a public facing statement that he is making so that he doesn’t lose public support. And privately, he is going to flip and help the US government. And of course Pete Hegeth is just going to say that he compelled them to do it through some law. But again, I am very cynical.
