I think the T480 is a great deal but be aware of the Thunderbolt firmware issues. It’s fixable if the firmware is not yet fully corrupted and if the firmware is up to date it shouldn’t be a problem, but I’m dealing with a dead thunderbolt chip on mine right now and it’s terrible

Privacy@lemmy.ml•What VPN do you use to hide traffic from your ISP?
261·3 years agoI use Mozilla VPN, which is just Mullvad but more expensive. I want to support Mozilla though and enjoy the integration with my multi account containers so i stick with it

Fediverse@lemmy.ml•The creator of Pixelfed announced an upcoming encrypted messenger for the fediverse that will work across the fediverse
142·3 years agoIf you care about privacy and security, matrix has some glaring flaws. The biggest IMO is not currently encrypting metadata, so who you talk to and when is plaintext. The signal protocol encrypts everything, including the meta data.

32·3 years agoI completely agree, but don’t forget that WebKit exists too on Mac and Linux with about the same market share as Firefox (at least based on w3school’s stats). Chrome/Blink dominate but all hope is not lost and there are more options, they’re just small. I think focusing on embracing Firefox/Gecko as it has so much momentum and community already is the most productive way forward though

10·3 years agoIt’s true, I’m somebody who has run DIY distros daily for years and decided to try out Debian on a spare computer recently. I couldn’t even update the system after the initial install. It took me like forty minutes to find a thread which explained to me that Debian 12 has a bug with some raspi firmware that requires you to delete three files before apt will work, and there is 0 indication on the paths themselves, just people who have figured it out and were generous enough to share the knowledge. You can’t blame new users for those things, we as a community need to improve the software and the attitudes

Fediverse@lemmy.ml•A clear victory for the free fediverse: Meta now says integrating with ActivityPub is "a long way out"
111·3 years agoHuh??? I never advocated for going back to a pre-agriculture society society at all, i was pushing back against the idea that governments ‘have always existed’ because of course they haven’t, that’s patently absurd since they are social constructs

Fediverse@lemmy.ml•A clear victory for the free fediverse: Meta now says integrating with ActivityPub is "a long way out"
1320·3 years agoLmao you think there were governments when early humans were wandering around the plains of Africa in tiny little tribes?
E: Downvote all you want but by the definitions being proposed here then all species have governments because they snatch food from one another, which is an immensely asinine description of ‘government’ since it describes and means effectively NOTHING
Until one of them starts to actually advocate for these policies i see no point in deluding ourselves into thinking voting blue will make any difference when they literally do not push for universal healthcare
Most of those with a D next to their name are fighting just as hard against universal healthcare while collecting campaign donations from pharmaceutical companies anyway. Both parties are rotten servants to the capitalist class

Flatpak is fantastic. I think containerization is definitely the future of Linux app distribution, because the security and portability are so much better than native packages. Flatpak is the best implementation of this concept IMO, because it has a robust permission management system, is completely open unlike snap, and is performant with fast load times, solid deduplication of dependencies, and no garbage loopback devices
I used mlem for a bit but memmy is my go to right now

Fedora KDE, Kinoite, or Nobara could all be of interest to you
