I have used sivlerblue, kinoite and bazite. Each one of them could run appimages. What are you using?

I cheeted, I used my partners Win11 desktop, installed the XBox accessorys app, update completed in about 4 minutes. I have had success with windows based firmware update tools using wine in the past; with a lot of troubleahooting. Her PC is 2 meters from me and it was done in 4 mintes… Yes I feel dirty, but it’s a one-off firmware update. Pick your battles.

1·1 year agoI am Australian. Yes, “suggested apps” masquerading as installed apps. Most if them shitty micro transaction games and adobe software. This is not preloaded software, I used to fresh install Windows on all my systems to get rid of that crud.

2·1 year agoThe final straw was when win10 started putting ads in the start menu. The start menu is so broken and bloated…
Sounds like circumcision propaganda to me.
Take a deep breath and look for the text that follows “password:” Self defeat is sell fufilling! Think of it as ASCII wheres Wally.

3·2 years agoI tried helping family and friends as well however the reasons why I wanted to switch (privacy issues and getting served start menu ads) where not shared.
Most people don’t care how something works or the moderations behind it just that it works and more importanty that it works exaclly the same way each time.
Ignoring an ad or slightly modifying your tolerance for a increasing shit process is more easy that trying a completely new approach. The way Mac OS overcomes this is with “buy in”, its expensive so people are more motivated to actually learn the Mac OS way to do things so their purchasing choices are validated. There are more reason but this is a big one.
Just keep yours expectations reliatic. Just because someone complains about windows does not mean they are ready to switch.

3·2 years agoHave not used windows on my personal computer and laptop for 3 years now. I still game, proton is awesome.
From memory the UK gov is trying to (or has?) pass anti-encription laws targeting the big tech giants GAFAM (google, apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft). I am in Australia so not up to date with this.
Its hard to tell from the icon pack they are using but I think this might be a screenshot from a degoogle phone? For example I don’t see any Facebook or Microsoft specific apps. But I do see a nextcloud app which is an open source self hostable replacement suite for Google’s cloud apps.
Basically the law change won’t affect them as they are not using any GAFAM apps/software.
Yep, or it gives you a glimpse and then clouds over again

Linux@lemmy.ml•What are the main challenges in Linux adoption for New users, and how can it be addressed?
21·3 years agoThis whole series triggered me so hard. They went out of their way to test it under the worst possible conditions.
- last at night
- setting a goal with a deadline/time constraints for first run
- not stopping and reading or thinking, just assuming away
- copy paste from google frsit thing that looks vagualy right
- tunnel vission
- not resources like Emily, ensuring they make big mistakes
Then they follow up with hypocrisy of this shit, after going on and on about UI not being right or hard to use for the end user.

All good. Checkout the flatpak called “gear leaver” for managing and updating appimages. It’s really helpful. If your using a ublue image it might already be installed.
